The Landing Grill and Sushi Bar (Westlake, Ca)

You know how I know it’s beginning to feel like Spring? When it’s a gorgeous sunny day, clear blue skies, and nice enough to eat outside. Thinking of this and wondering what eatery in the 805 had a great deck or patio seating, I instantly thought of The Landing. It’s a shopping center and walkway around the actual lake of Westlake where there are tons of boats and ducks. (You’re not supposed to feed the ducks, but we always did.) I used to go all the time from when I was one year old to last year, but I had never eaten at one of the restaurants.

With two restaurants to choose from, I went with The Landing Grill and Sushi Bar. Arriving at 11:45am I thought I would be the beginning of the lunch rush, but I was actually right in the middle of it. All tables closest to the water were already taken so I took one in the back, but still had a great view.

The menu was mostly Asian inspired with rice bowls, sushi, and rice boxes, but still offered different salads, sandwiches, burgers, and pasta.  I decided to go with the shrimp tempura bento box because I love shrimp and it gave me a variety of different things. I first started with miso soup and then was served my box with rice, california roll, shrimp tempera, and oriental salad. The oriental salad dressing was really good, but they drowned the lettuce in it so make sure you say light dressing.

The service was excellent, but unfortunately nothing that was served gave me the “wow” factor. I would come back to try a dessert, enjoy the atmosphere and view, and of course for the entertainment of the ducks (they walked through the patio and under the tables looking for crumbs.)

Pancho Lopez Mexican Cuisine (Los Angeles, Ca)

Due to this New Years resolution, we are forced to be creative about where we go for meals. One night last week, we knew that we wanted to go out, but where! Tiff came up with a place she saw one day while getting gas in the San Fernando Valley. It’s name, Pancho Lopez Mexican Cuisine. The location is so new that they have no permanent sign up on the building; only a banner. Despite already having grafetti outside, the place was very cleaned, although cramped, but filled with great pictures and bright mexican colors.

We had our choice to sit where ever by our soon to be waiter who came over almost immediately asking if we would like chips, salsa, and guacamole (which is one of our weaknesses.) With the size and look of the place, the fact it was a “sit down” restaurant totally threw me off, but not in a bad way. The guacamole was VERY fresh and for it being close to 9pm, having fresh guacamole with no discoloration or lack of pop was amazing. The salsa was fresh as well along with a spicy salsa incase you want to spice things up.

We looked at the menu and both of us were happy with what we saw. It had  a variety of items you would see in a small taco shack and things you’d see in a nice mexican restaurant. With combination plates with all kinds of seafood and a collection of burritos, it would take you all month to try every one.

The service was fast, the food was very tasty, very fresh and very appealing.

New Years Resolution Update…

So just thought I’d update those curious ones out there wondering what food places we have knocked off our list for the year 2011. First we wanted to clarify the rules: Due to Evan being on the Moorpark College Volleyball team and needing to eat with the team when they travel, he is allowed to eat multiple times at a place BUT only if the team has to go there. So if the team stops at Chipotle after the game for dinner and they stop there again, that’s ok because we aren’t going to make him starve. If however he gets back to school and some of the guys say “hey ev lets go grab some TB…” If he goes and buys something ta ta see yea later Taco Bell.

We also added the rule that if our parents say 3 amigos is what’s for dinner, we don’t pay and didn’t suggest the place, then we don’t have to cross it off the list. It’s only when we decide to go and pay for the meal ourselves. It would be pretty rude of us and difficult if we were invited over for dinner to someone’s house and said “Oh nope sorry can’t eat this pizza; we’ve already eaten at this place.” The whole point of the resolution was to save money so we weren’t eating out everyday. We still are trying to make sure we only go to each place once even if our parents pay so it’s more challenging for us.

So, the ones we’ve crossed off our list so far are:

1. Chipotle

2. Philippes

3.Sharkey’s

4. Winner’s Pizza

5. Sushi Co.

and others, but I’m drawing a blank haha

The worst so far is the lack of coke. The only time we really seem to miss fast food is when we are starving and no where near home to make something. That’s when it gets hard, but other than that we are holding strong. :)

More to come…

Nothing Bundt Cakes (Thousand Oaks, Ca)

Set Scene: You just got engaged. You’re really excited. You’ve done all the planning and it’s down to the final stretch; last leg of the race. Now it’s time for you to be pampered. Relieve all your stress. What better way than having your mother or close friend throw you a bridal shower? You get to drink, eat, relax, open gifts, and did I mention eat? It’s the day before the BIG ONE where you get to put your feet up and let someone else take care of the details. You can catch your breath for a second, take everything in so you don’t miss the moment. Not only the part where you fancy yourself a new hubby, but realizing all the family and friends who surround you, wanting to be there for that special event.

Feeling the pressure bridesmaids? Don’t worry, Nothing Bundt Cakes is always there for you! Decorated and themed for almost any occasion, is the “icing on the cake” for these rich tasting and elegant looking cakes. Not only do these cakes knock you out of your seat with their decadent taste, the presentation is truly unique. Your bride will be speechless and be in heaven with just one bite.

One things for sure, you won’t be asking for more frosting. These bundt cakes are filled with gooey rich vanilla frosting for all those “I wish they put more frosting on this cake” people. Nope, definitely no skimping on the frosting with these cakes, nor do they limit you to cake selection. They have many assorted flavors such as chocolate chip, red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, lemon, carrot, marble, pecan, praline, and cinnamon swirl. All cakes are priced the same no matter what flavor you choose.

The tiered cake option would be best for a bridal shower with the 8” cake they offer on top and the 10” cake they offer on the bottom. Both, I was advised, can come in any flavor that you want. The tiered cake serves approximately 26 people which should be perfect for a larger gathering. They sell the 8” and 10” cakes separately if your party is smaller and don’t need the tiered option. They also sell what they call bundlets which is a 1-2 person serving bundt cake. The brides could always return the favor to their bridesmaids and get a bundlet as a gift!

Nothing Bundt Cakes is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, but more importantly, a bride pleaser. Nothing will melt away her stress and get her anticipation up for the wedding, as well as other guests invited, than a melt in your mouth bundt cake. ***IMPORTANT*** Make sure the bride doesn’t eat the whole cake (which she might try) because it could back-fire on you if she doesn’t fit into her wedding dress.

“Hooked” on Hook Burger Bistro (Oxnard, Ca)

Hook Burger Bistro. You’d think you would find Captain Hook around the place somewhere, but not at this new hotspot in Oxnard. No, pretty sure the word “Hook” in the place’s name comes from being “hooked” and wanting to come back again and again.

Evan was the one insistent on going to check it out, (he LOVES burgers) and I’m really glad we did. His dad saw their new opening article in the newspaper and really suggested we go to it. It turns out that Hook Burger Bistro is owned by the same owners of the chain restaurant The Habit, which I feel should be put under debate, won Ventura County’s best burger. With that in mind, we were curious as to how this place would differentiate itself.

Walking in we saw waitresses walking around checking on customers in these elegant comfy booths, so we thought “Oh cool! The Habit owners made a restaurant burger joint!” Little did we know, it wasn’t quite what we thought.

Standing in the middle of the restaurant, where what should have been the hostess table, was not. We turned to our left and saw a giant LED screen of a menu. Next to the menu was a woman behind a cash register asking if she could take our order. Taking a minute to grasp all that was around us, we stepped back to examine the menu and the surrounding restaurant.

They had an open kitchen and tons of booths just like the burger chain The Habit, but that’s about all they had in common. The biggest thing that differentiates Hook Burger Bistro in appearance not only from The Habit, but all burger joints is that you can order a drink and eat at their full shelved side bar!

Putting aside the cool factor for a second and trying to focus on what we wanted to eat, we were in awe of the menu. One page of choices is what I really like about the place. They focus on a few choices of burgers, sandwiches, salads, and sides and conquer them in great taste. It’s simple, to the point, and great quality.

As soon as you order, you pay, just like any fast food place, but the difference is that after you’re done ordering and given your beverage, that’s the last time you’ll feel like you’re at a fast food place; the rest of the evening is catered to you. Your food is brought to you and your refills are taken care of by their “waitresses.” The “waitresses” are part of the experience so it’s not necessary to tip, but you can if you’d like. Hook Burger Bistro gives you the experience of being at a restaurant without paying the price.

Not only does Hook Burger Bistro wow you with presentation of their place, but they blow you away with the quality and amount you get for the price you pay. Their food literally looks like a $16 dollar burger, while only paying a fourth of the price. This place is worth every inexpensive penny you pay and is one of our new top burger spots. We know you’ll feel the same and get hooked, too.

New Years Resolution

So for the followers of 4 Track Minds we’re sorry we haven’t been updating our site. We’ve been super busy with family and friends with the holiday season. But there’s good news! Tiffany and I have a New Years Resolution that will be fun and very challenging.

For the year 2011, Tiff and I will not eat out at the same place twice. This will force us to eat at home a lot more so there will be some home recipe posts for 2011. We are huge fast food eaters, eating out about once a day if not more.

We cannot eat out at the same place twice, including fast food chains so if we eat at Taco Bell once we can’t eat at Taco Bell again until 2012. Not eating out as much will allow us to save money for our wedding which will be in 2012 as well. We’re both very excited about this resolution and can’t wait to embark upon it and post about all the places we venture off to.

During our little break from our computers we’ve accumulated a ton of places we can post about so if we are eating at home a lot one week we will be able to post something to keep you all updated. Those places include some very very good places and some ok places. To name a few of our future posts, Hook Burger Bistro in Oxnard, Burger Barn in Camarillo, Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas, Rusty’s Pizza Parlor, Longboards in Santa Barbara, and much much more.

Happy New Year to everyone and stay safe on New Years Eve especially if you’re traveling.

Toppers by the Sea

Wow is all that could be said by both Evan and I when we walked into the Toppers at Channel Islands, also known as Toppers by the Sea. Thundering and lightning, we ran inside to find a huge two story masterpiece with tons of windows to display the amazing view of the harbor. If you’ve ever eaten at Toppers Pizza Place before, you know each one is single story, has the basic benches, T.V.s, salad bar, etc. Well, Toppers by the Sea is definitely making a statement and redefining your idea of what this popular pizza place should look like. Your mouth will drop just like ours did in awe of what you walk into.

Newly renovated after being vacant for 14 years when a restaurant called the Golden Dolphin went out, Toppers by the Sea has more than enough room for many parties, no matter the size, to come for a night out or even a night of Monday night football. Like all Toppers, this place is great for families and embraces that “family night out” feel with something for everyone; arcade for the kids, sports on the T.V’s for the men, and a beautiful view of the harbor for the women.

The best and most innovative thing Toppers by the Sea offers, that I’ve never seen anywhere, let alone another Toppers, is the awesome self service soda machine, thanks to Coca Cola. First of all, it’s a touch screen for you to search which beverage you would like (there are a lot) and second, once you’ve selected which beverage you would like, it gives you 2-3 other options of that same drink, but with added flavors. For example, we are big Coke fans so first we selected Coke and then it gave us the final option of Orange Coke, Raspberry Coke, Coke and Lime, Vanilla Coke, or the Classic regular Coke. Of course we tried them all! I mean, how could we not?! We couldn’t stop saying, “This is sooo cool!” Don’t worry, you’ll do the same.

The only confusing part about Toppers by the Sea is that with the classy presentation it holds, it makes you wonder whether you’re supposed to dress up or dress casual? The answer is up to you. The atmosphere does give off a casual, relaxed feel that you and your family can enjoy, but you could definitely find yourself in a secluded corner for a romantic evening of harbor watching, too.

Whatever way you choose to dine, the food is always amazing! While the sandwiches are very tasty, we just can’t stay away from the newly created pizza called the chipotle carnitas. Layered with freshly cut onion, huge chunks of tomato, and fresh cilantro brings out only the best in the grilled, shredded carnitas, BUT it’s the chipotle sauce that brings out the carnitas’ smokiness, tying everything together. (I’m drooling just thinking about it.) It’s such a deal when you compare how good it is, to the price. It’s one of those pizzas that not only pleases the palette, but your eyes as well.

Toppers by the Sea is the 7th Toppers to be opened in Ventura County, but it finds itself to separate from the others through presentation, innovation, and remodeling. This is hands-down not only a Toppers to check out, but pizza place in general. Be ready to come back again because once you’ve experienced this place, nothing else will ever seem as good.

Carli’s Bistro

Tucked away in Old Moorpark, off the beaten path, Carli’s Bistro is found with a feel of a beach house; frayed bamboo looking umbrellas contributes to this feel on their outdoor front patio. I love how they have their patio in the front because they are right across the street from the AMTRACK train tracks and can catch that every once in awhile, as well as just be entertained from the people walking by. It’s very low key and quaint so you get a feeling of “kick off your shoes and stay awhile” eating in the historic area; being in a rush is not what Old Moorpark is about.

Although Carli’s Bistro is open for both lunch and dinner, offering mostly sandwiches, I categorize them as a lunch hotspot. There’s also a fancy restaurant two doors down that people go for dinner so for Carli’s, lunch is their territory.

Ever since I returned to the West Coast from going to school in Pennsylvania and taking many trips to Philadelphia for their famous cheesesteaks, I can’t help but get huge eyes if I see it on a menu out here in California. As soon as my eyes caught the words of cheesesteak on Carli’s menu, I knew nothing else was going to compare and that’s what I was getting. Of course, I know nothing is ever like Philly’s because we are California and we have to make it our own, but I’m on a mission to find the best cheesesteak I can in California so when I have my craving I know exactly where to go.

I of course took Evan to try the famous Philly cheesesteaks whenever he came to visit, so he is just like me when we see cheesesteaks on the menu- he’s getting it. We normally like to order different things so we can try more of the menu, so when we do see cheesesteak, we battle over who gets to order it and who has to order something else. In our case, Carli’s was more than perfect for us because they had many variations of their cheesesteak sandwich so we both got one!

All of the cheesesteak sandwiches start with the classic steak, onions, and cheese and then from their they get creative with what they layer on top. Mine was a Texas meets California with freshly cut tomatoes and drizzled BBQ sauce and Evan’s was a classic California inspired one with avocado and ranch dressing.

*shivers and gags* (I’m not a fan of ranch dressing……at all.)

My sandwich was amazing; there’s something about that cool tomato with hot meat that gets you. Combined with the grilled onions gives it just the right smokiness and the BBQ sauce, come on, enough said.

Every sandwich comes with choice of fries or homemade chips. Yep, thats right, I said homemade chips. Freshly made everyday in 100% canola oil, they have a great crispy crunch. I love when restaurants take the time to have something on their menu that’s homemade. To me it shows they want to put time into their business to make your experience memorable and different from Joe Schmoe down the street.

The only downfall of making homemade chips though is making sure you are constantly making them or having a way to keep them fresh. Unfortunately, we didn’t get as fresh of a batch as we probably could have, but I’d order the homemade chips again and again because I don’t hold grudges.

Although Old Moorpark isn’t like Main Street of Ventura where it has tons of shops and restaurants, it still has some cute stores and good food. It’s something to check out and definitely enjoy a nice lunch at Carli’s Bistro. It could be fun to even make a day of it and take the train!

My Florist (Ventura, California)

Looking for that place to get drinks, hang out with your friends, eat some really great food in a place you could lounge out and chill? My Florist is the PERFECT place! No, much to your dismay, it’s not a flower shop. This fairly large restaurant and bar is located in downtown Ventura with an atmosphere of relaxation. Depending on what night you go, you may not catch any live music, but there will always be a very relaxing feel of “island paradise” as you are surrounded by beautiful landscape pictures on their televisions as well as blue and yellow lights to brighten your mood.

Being that My Florist is very classy, it comes with a price. So if you can’t dish 15 dollars for their special Mac and Cheese, go for happy hour and dessert! This could be the perfect way to treat yourself after a long day or just cause you feel like it! That’s what we did one night.

Picking any seats you’d like is one perk about the place to fulfill your desired mood for the night. We chose a more comfortable couch rather than table to enjoy our drinks and dessert. A booklet menu full of special and classics drinks caters to whatever you’re in the mood for. We arrived at 6:45pm; just in time for happy hour which ended at 7:00pm. Like most restaurants, their happy hour consisted of $2 off beers and half off appetizers, but they also had $2 mimosas. A mimosa sounded wonderful so I sprung for that while Evan got a bottled New Castle.

The service at My Florist is known as European. This means enjoy the atmosphere and relax in the company of whom you’re dining with because the service will be slower. In Europe, people spend hours at a restaurant, relaxing after a long day. You could spend hours at My Florist if you really wanted to and depending how much you order, but bottom line is don’t expect your server to be running around trying to get your meal to you as quickly as possible. We were one of three parties inside ordering drinks and dessert and it took almost 20 minutes from the time we ordered dessert to the time we received them.

Before ordering our desserts, the manager explained that their desserts vary on the night based on what they run out of. Because of this, make sure to ask what the desserts are before you look at the menu because they may be out of what you want and have a substitute that sounds better. We ordered the molten chocolate cake al a mode as well as the bread pudding. The chocolate cake just oozed with chocolate filling and melted in your mouth with the contrast of cool ice cream and warm cake. The bread pudding had wonderful chunks of artisan bread coated in butter. Each bite had a little bit of crunch to it from being baked, but soft in the cream mixture. I would recommend both al a mode.

Before you leave, you have to go the bathroom. Remember World Foot Locker and the giant silver statue? If you didn’t already notice it when you walked in, you’ll definitely be greeted by it on your way to check out the awesome bathrooms.

Mai’s Cafe (Ventura, California)

If you didn’t already know, Main Street in Ventura is very long. East and West Main Street are separated by Ventura Avenue, right past the mission. The section of East Main Street from the Main Street exit has more older buildings and another lane to the street making it seem more open, busy, and accessible to the mall and residential housing. Exiting California Street is considered more “downtown” with it slowing down to one lane, lots of shopping and dining, as well as holding various events and festivals. Mai’s Cafe & Da Aloha Lounge is located at 1967 E. Main Street, the older part of Main Street.

Heading to Mai’s Cafe on a Monday evening, we had no trouble parking right in front for two free hours to dine. Dressed to kill, as always, we walked into the fresh Hawaiian and Vietnamese cafe ready to devour some delicious food. Having a coupon for a free entree if we bought another entree and two drinks, we couldn’t order just water and I’m so glad we didn’t.

Being a neon green lover I was so excited when she came out with our cokes in their awesome, giant, neon colored glasses. Evan felt the coke was lacking the proper syrup needed, (we are huge coke fans and can notice differences,) but the resemblance of mushroom shaped ice cubes in the drinks totally made up for it in my book!

Since Mai’s is both Vietnamese and Hawaiian, we somehow ended up ordering one entree from each cuisine. I ordered the kahlua pig which was slow roasted in banana leaves. You can’t taste any banana, but those leaves really bring out a different kind of fresh flavor and keeps the meat very moist. Mine also came with a macaroni salad and kimchi. I had no idea what kimchi was, even when I tasted it, but I could tell it was a vegetable coated in spices because it definitely packed a punch. Later I found out that it was Napa cabbage, soaked in spices, and it’s actually the most popular Korean side dish. Who knew I had picked such a global plate of food!

Evan ordered sate, labeled under “soups,” which included shrimp, beef, and chicken, cooked with chili powder and other spices, and served with noodles. The woman offered him the choice of mild or medium spice, but not hot because she wants to make sure you can actually taste the dish you’re eating. Picking medium since he loves spicy food and that was the highest she allows, the meat was spicy as promised, but in a tolerant way for even a non spicy eater like me to try. Although very good, the beef, shrimp, and chicken didn’t have the correct proportions to the noodles like Evan had hoped. Soon he found himself not even half way through and left with a big bowl of noodles.

Mai’s also has a small bar, but rather than fill it with customers, family sat there to eat or wait until they were needed elsewhere. I read in an ad about the cafe that they have live entertainment, but none that we saw. I assume they have it only for the larger crowds on weekends. Call before you go in to check what or if they will be having any if that interests you. If not, pick a casual day of the week for the very mellow atmosphere.

After we ordered, I scoped out the store from my seat with my wandering eyes and landed upon a very unique sign I’ve never seen a restaurant or bar post. It told to inquire with them if you were interested in their offering of a flight to Vietnam with airfare, hotel, and 3 meals included for 14 days under $2,700. I had to double take about twice to make sure I was reading it right, but it seems to be legitimate. Pretty crazy stuff huh?!

Spudnuts

Located all over Southern California, Spudnuts is my favorite donut shop because it holds my favorite donut (chocolate frosted bar filled with chocolate chips and topped with chocolate chips.) I’ve tried many donuts and gone to dozens of different donut places “claiming” to have the best, but Spudnuts has never disappointed me.

The donut above (now looking like Ms. Pacman) was pretty big. As you can see it’s eating the mug haha. Evan picked this extra giant donut when we went for dessert at the Spudnuts in Oxnard. Although they have many locations they are all a little different in what they offer, how they are displayed, etc. but they all have one thing in common: fresh, yummy donuts.

They also have locations in Florida, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Virginia, Utah, Washington, and even Canada! Some people are trying to be more healthy and think that donuts are out of their league, but even you healthy people have dessert! You have those cheat days where you fulfill your sweet tooth. All we are saying is, give donuts a chaaaaance.

5 Guys Burgers and Fries COMING SOON to T.O.!!

In n Out’s burgers are about to have some competition as 5 Guys moves in to Thousand Oaks. Although two completely different burgers, their high quality and great taste will have them in a guaranteed neck and neck battle fighting for customers.

While In-n-Out is known as one of the best burgers in California and thousands of tourists are amazed when they try it, 5 Guys is one of the best burgers on the East. Sweeping the nation it has reached the West, but will it stand a chance??

Similar to In-n-Out, they specialize in burgers (but have hot dogs too) and that’s the jist of their menu. So if you aren’t in the mood for a burger, this isn’t the place for you.

As soon as you walk in, you are welcomed with the option of free peanuts while you wait in line or while you wait for your food to be ready. Who doesn’t love free peanuts?! As you approach the board, you may be amazed as to how many different options you have to dress your burger. Anything from green peppers, grilled onions, mushrooms, BBQ sauce (to name a few) to A1 sauce AND they are all FREE!!** You can have any or all toppings they have listed! They also are a little tricky for first timers because their regular burger is actually two patty’s compared to their “baby burger” with just one patty.

Another similarity 5 Guys has to In-n-Out is the two different options for their fries. Aside from their regular fries, you also have the option at 5 Guys to get your fries cajun style. It has a similar taste to seasoned fries and it’s only a couple cents more; WORTH IT! Their fries are meant for sharing so if you get a regular it will be perfect for two people, possibly even three and their large will feed at least 3-4 people.

SO although In-n-Out might always be your favorite because you don’t want to feel like you are betraying them, at least try 5 Guys and you can just silently admit that they are delicious. It’s located right next to El Torito on Moorpark Road and will be opening soon, so make sure to keep an eye out for the doors to be open!

Note** My mom basically got all the toppings because she was so excited and the burger was just a little bit bigger than her mouth, just a little bit.
